How Can Scrum Teams Plan Sprints to Achieve Sprint Goals?

Teams plan by selecting Product Backlog Items that directly support the outcome-based goal. If items don’t contribute, they may need to refine their Sprint Goal to ensure focus.

Metaphor

Planning a Sprint around the goal is like packing a carry-on bag for a trip. Every item you choose should serve the destination, and anything that doesn’t fit the purpose probably belongs at home.

In the same way, Scrum Teams select backlog items that move them toward the Sprint Goal, refining the goal if needed so their work stays focused and intentional.

Planning the Sprint is about choosing the backlog items that let you run an experiment and get valid evidence, keeping the work focused and aligned.
