What Are Inputs in Project or Product Development?

Inputs are everything needed for a project or product, including money, time, resources, people, effort, plans, and documents. They represent the investment made before any tangible results are produced.

Metaphor

Inputs in project development are like the groceries, kitchen tools, and chef’s time you need before you can serve a meal.

They’re the upfront investment that makes the final dish possible, even if no one’s tasted anything yet. In the same way, money, time, resources, and effort are the essential ingredients that fuel a project before any tangible results emerge.

Inputs are one of the things we often choose to measure, since they represent the resources invested before results emerge.
